Nighttime is often seen as a fearful and nefarious part of our existence.
But there is so much magic in the night. While we sleep nature is alive with another realm of life. And as we slumber we can slip into magical realms that defy, define, and heal our daily existence.

As darkness falls our subconscious has its way with us.
It seems we are led down pathways beyond the awareness of who we think we are. A portal between the conscious and the subconscious world.

When preparing for the Nocturnal trio show at CEG I began a series called Night Portals.
My exploration was to create imagery suggesting the pathway between the seen and unseen that present at night. A archetypal doorway linked to our biochemistry.

Much of our lives exist in these antimatter portions of our brain.
After all, our brain is the master of the body and our perception. It can filter and overlay reality through and beyond our senses. At dusk our brains ceases serotonin production and begin to release melatonin and other hormones into our brain and body. What then happens to our waking consciousness?

Throughout history people have recorded their adventures beyond the body.
Call it astral travel, out of body or just imagination, there is so much more of our nocturnal life to explore.

My night portals are symbols of what is experienced in the dark.
I created nocturnal porcelain animals, ones who hunt or feed in the night or twilight hours. And while sculpting night blooming flowers and foliage I fell in love! The flowers of plants like Queen of the night, Datura, and moon flowers create alluring scents to attract pollinators like bats and moths. The hidden geometric symbols like the flower of life or the metatron are ancient and used for focus and meditation.

I too wanted to make pretty whimsical nature beings to draw attention to each artwork.
Like the magical process of my own dreams where imagery draws me in, teaches me, heals me, and expands my awareness.
