Robert Ellert

Raku

Robert Ellert began studying ceramics and making pottery in high school in 1971. Through the years Robert has developed his skill and style working in various clay processes. He has made functional stoneware and done salt firing. He is currently working in the Raku medium. His work can be seen in select galleries and private collections worldwide.

Originally, pieces of raku were bowls used for the tea ceremony. During the 16th century raku signified enjoyment and freedom to the Japanese people, and today Robert creates raku for the same reason.

The pottery is heated to red hot, removed from the kiln and cooled in a combustible material such as sawdust, leaves or straw, giving the copper-based glaze contrast. The pottery is designed and produced strictly for non-functional purpose. The porous clay body is not waterproof. Raku is a delicate art form and care should be taken in the handling and display. Cleaning should be done with a dry soft brush or a feather duster.
