Mary Denning

Mary's interest in pastel painting began during her years at Whitworth College in Spokane, WA where she majored in art and elementary education. Though she has worked in watercolor and oil as well as calligraphy, her interest has consistently turned primarily to pastel because of the medium's potential for glowing, vibrant color and the harmony achieved in bringing together light and shadows.

Mary enjoys painting landscapes, portraits and still life using subject matter that is meant to evoke a sense of intimacy, warmth and community. As a mother of three and grandmother of eleven, she has dine works portraying family members, and seeks to demonstrate to the beholder the primary message the work intends to convey. She especially enjoys doing commissioned works.

She was a member of "TAG", the art group of Spokane prior to moving with her husband to western Washington. She currently is a member of the Northwest Pastel Society and the Olympia Art League, and has won numerous awards for her work. Her paintings have been displayed in galleries and shows throughout Washington and Oregon.
