Our holiday exhibit features three of our most recognized artists, who have certainly become part of the Childhood’s End Gallery family over the years. The gallery gladly brings back raku ceramics from Dave & Boni Deal, cut-feather shadowboxes by Chris Maynard and pastels & pen & ink sketches from Judith Smith. It is apparent that each of these artists hold a deep connection to Nature, and each piece of theirs is a lasting reminder of that.

Dave and Boni Deal’s raku ceramic pieces are beautifully created with their distinctive impressions of falling leaves, ferns, graceful herons and even a study of “The Great Wave,” similar to the iconic mural painted on the side of our gallery. Wall platters, triptychs, bowls & vases all take the smokiness and glow that raku is known for to another level.

You really have to see the cut feather shadowboxes by Chris Maynard to truly appreciate them. Chris carefully hand cuts feathers, so intricately and accurately, that you can see chips of bark being chiseled away by a woodpecker, talons of a songbird in flight and even the antennae of a mayfly. Maynard’s shadowboxes are truly a very different style of art that we have only seen from this Olympia artist.

Owls have always had deep meaning in native lore, and anyone lucky enough to see one, is certain to have a story. Judith Smith has captured the essence of these beautiful creatures – from their varied shapes and markings, to the piercing depth of their eyes. In addition to pastels that Smith has exhibited with us in the past, she has brought us lovely pen and ink sketches for the first time.

Chris and Judith will be at Childhood’s End Gallery on Sunday, December 3rd at 3pm for an Artist Talk.
