Mixed media paintings from Susan Aurand & Liza Brenner

Mixed media paintings from Susan Aurand & Liza Brenner

Two Olympia artists show us a window into their creative perspectives in our July exhibit. Come in and see why Susan Aurand has been a respected Professor of Art since 1974 and Faculty Emerita at The Evergreen State College and Liza Brenner is  an Assistant Professor of Arts at South Puget Sound Community College.

The divided, hand made frames of Susan Aurand‘s mixed media paintings make you feel as if you are gazing through an antique window frame with multiple perspectives of the glowing sky or landscape that lie on the other side. In addition to the subject, each painting has its own three dimensional compliment – a gilded branch, apothecary jars, shells, seeds, bone or etched glass are simple, yet strong elements of Susan’s new work.

Three dimensional features are present in the bold oil and mixed media collages of Liza Brenner as well. Pattern, vibrant color and strong figures are what first catch your eye with Brenner’s work. The imagery is a mix of current everyday life and an era of days gone by. Fanciful bright garb on figures such as a belly dancer & circus entertainers balance well with the tee shirts and familiar modern settings of today. In most pieces, an inset portal, through a window of a building or car door offer a deeper unexpected perspective of the painting or drawing, blurring the lines of time and settings.

We will be adding new work from Washington potter, Reid Ozaki to the show in the next few weeks. Be sure to check back on our blog or Facebook page, to find out when it arrives.
