Copper artist, Shelley Carr with new public installation.

We have been admiring the familiar landmarks and local imagery etched into copper by Olympia artist, Shelley Carr for years. Now, Tacoma General Hospital has an incredible new installation recently completed by Carr, that has been months in the making.

Eight copper “quilts”, depicting everyday life in Tacoma, now wrap two large columns in the hospital’s William Philip Lobby. Historic Union Station, the ultra modern Glass Museum, even the Pink Elephant Car Wash are represented. These small, metalic glimpses of Tacoma – the history, architecture, industry and people remind us of why Tacoma isn’t a suburb, but it’s own unique community.

While we hope you never have to go to the hospital, we encourage you drop in, to view these spectacular columns if you get the chance. Childhood’s End currently has several pieces from Shelley and will be featuring her work in an exhibit later this year. Please visit our website for more insight on Shelley Carr.
