Artist Statement: Red Salmon Creek Project 2009-11
I volunteer as a salmon watcher for the Nisqually Tribe at Red Salmon Creek in South Puget Sound. The creek flows into the Nisqually River and then Puget Sound. Recently the Nisqually Tribe removed 100-year-old agricultural dikes. Now salt water floods the estuary allowing the river to breathe once again. This dramatically increases the habitat for salmon and lots of other species. Extensive restoration efforts are underway that include removal of invasive plants and planting of over 7000 native trees and shrubs. I visit the spring fed creek and salt marsh frequently during the year and record my observations. I'm inspired by the hardiness of and interconnections between the species that live there. This series focuses on my discoveries at the creek during the winter and spring of 2010.
